The Refreshing Climate of Boquete The refreshing climate of Boquete is something that more tourists visit every year when they come to Panama. Tucked into the country’s highlands, Boquete is located approximately 1,200 meters above sea level on the inactive volcano, Volcan Baru. Boquete was founded in April, 1911. The name comes from the Spanish word for gap or opening. The name was coined in the sixteenth century by explorers seeking treasures as well as a quicker route from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Its scenic location, temperature, and natural environment make it extremely popular with Panamanians, and with tourists from all over the world.
Farmers began settling the region near the end of the 19th Century and even now, agriculture is Boquete’s chief industry. Located in a cloud forest, the climate is perfect for growing, among other things, coffee and orchids. The coffee from Boquete is among the best in the world and there are species of orchids that are only found here. Each January, Boquete hosts an orchid festival to celebrate this beautiful flower.
In recent years, Boquete has also become a major tourist location as well as a retirement area. Many foreigners are drawn here from many countries because they are able to combine the wonderful climate, the low cost of living and the retirement benefits that Panama provides. This combination is very appealing to people from lands with there is a higher costs of living.
