Near Volcan is the largest highland forest in Central America, La Amistad International Park. It was established jointly by Panama and Costa Rica. The park is home to over 90 mammal species, including jaguars and pumas. Among the more than 400 recorded bird species found there are the Resplendent Quetzals and harpy eagles. It is also home to the Teribe, Bribri and the Ngöbe-Buglí Indian tribes.

Go Horseback Riding around Boquete

The mountains above Boquete, Panama are a wonderful place to ride horses. The Chiriqui highland is farm and cattle country. Horseback riding not only has a history here, but it is necessary for rounding up stray cattle and visiting remote parts of ones land.

If you ride and would like to explore the mountains around Boquete, you can sign up for one of the horseback riding tours. This is a five four trip from 8 am to 1 pm for $45. You should bring a small backpack to carry a rain poncho, sunscreen, two-liter water bottle, snacks, and your camera or camcorder in a plastic bag. A broad brimmed hat and sunglasses are also a good idea.

The rolling hills, shadowed by volcanic cliffs of the Caldera Highlands, make a wonderful place to ride and enjoy the beauty of nature. The area is dryer than Boquete. This is typical of this whole mountainous region. There seems to be a different micro-climate around every turn or at least up of down every trail.

Located in the Caldera River Valley, Boquete is the gateway to hiking the mountains of Chirqui, Province, Panama. If you are visiting and want to hike the most interesting, most scenic trails with the best chances of seeing so exotic bird life, take one of the many guided tours out of Boquete. The guides will alert you to unique features of the landscape, as well and the plants and wildlife of the Panama highlands. You will have the chance to see such exotic creatures as the Quetzal, with its colorful plumage.

You will want to bring good walking shoes because the terrain is uneven. Although the guides do not take you on dangerous trails, this is nature hike. Rains wash out trails, trees fall blocking paths, sometimes requiring a little group effort to pass up and over. Hikes around Boquete allow you to see nature up close and help orient you to the natural surroundings in this area so blessed with natural beauty.
